1966 Over a Thousand Throng to Fall Fair
admin — Tue, 03/22/2011 - 23:30
Over one thousand people converged on Louis Creek on Labour Day to enjoy what the North Thompson Fall Fair had to offer them. There was a friendly atmosphere everywhere, a feeling of gaiety, the sound of laughter, old friends meeting, acquaintances renewed. Hundreds of people intermingled, children enjoying little cars, small faces smudged with chocolate ice cream and dust; all these and many more where a part of the annual Fair.
The day, weather wise was perfect, and on a par financially with other years.
Exhibits were fewer, but quality better according to the judges.
More than fifty horses and riders provided a couple of hours of, to many, the grandest entertainment in the 'horse events'.
Concessions were all kept busy; the P.T.A. booth reported over 150 cases of pop being sold as well as other refreshments.
Johnny's dining area was kept very busy as he and his helpers excelled in putting on a dinner for fifty cents! This year it was served in a 'brand new' building.
Jack Paul of Surrey, a buyer for Burns Company was in charge of the barbecuing of over three hundred pounds being cooked in a pit to tender goodness. One parcel of barbecued beef was auctioned by Jack Paul with the proceeds of $27 being donated to the Crippled Children's Fund.
As usual, Bill Mattenly of Vancouver was on hand to do a super job of announcing all events etc.
QUEEN OF THE FAIR
Miss Beverley Fennell, was crowned Queen of the Fair by retiring Queen of 1965, Anna Di Mambro, followed by the parade. Queen Beverley was accompanied by her Royal Attendents, Elizabeth Salle, Sharon Gunderson and Judy Kerslake. Queen Beverley presented the retiring Queen with a bracelet and then officially opened the Fair.
The Catholic Womens Group was kept busy serving hot snacks to hundreds and the Bingo booth, manned by Bill Dodge was most successful.
Bill Rand, auctioneer from Kamloops auctioned off all the donated vegetables and fruits so a few more dollars were added to the Fair fund.
Many returned to attend, the dance in the evening, and all report a wonderful time!
