1978 29th Fall Fair Was Greatest
In spite of a few disappointments such as the band that had to cancel out at the last minute to march in the parade, the last minute cancellation of the rides because of mechanical problems the 29th. Annual North Thompson Fall Fair was the most successful ever staged in Barriere.
Despite a cool wet weekend (no one thought to invite the weatherman to ensure a sunny weekend) there was a record attendance for both days of the fair.
The cool weather was a blessing in disguise for the groups who were providing hot meals, hamburgers and hot dogs because the food consumption was double the normal for the fair. By Sunday evening the entire stock of food laid in for both days was gone and the busy kitchen crews were scrambling everywhere in an effort to provision for Monday.
One of the highlights for the youngsters were the goat-chariot rides provided by Mr. and Mrs. Frank Black of Pinantan Lake near Kamloop. They brought four of their trained goats and chariots, and with the aid of a PA system created a carnival effect that had the youngsters enthralled as they rode around the ring and a crowd of oldsters who watched appeared to be enjoying- the rides just as much as the young ones.
The Square Dancing. Rodeo Chariot and Chuck-wagon races added to the interest of the livestock displays and the large number of exhibits of fruit, vegetables, home baking, flowers and handicrafts of every description in the exhibit hall. The commercial displays of everything from snowmobiles to windows and kitchen cabinets attracted the attention of the swarms of people milling around the hall and the grounds for the two days.
The Lions Club mobile kitchen which was on hand each day serving their well known pancake breakfasts to exhibitors who stayed with their stock on the grounds and the early comers was most welcome and was a great addition to the services offered by the Fall Fair Association and the other local service clubs. The covered beer garden offered a welcome spot to rest and quench one's thirst as well.
The wind up event of the two day celebration was the dance on Monday night which was well attended and according to local RCMP was very well behaved with no complains being received.
The weary executive and working members of the Fall Fair Society were numbly at rest after the fair satisfied they had again done a good job of providing one of the best fairs staged in the North Thompson.
