2008 BC Anniversary Celebration
When BC turns 150 in 2008 there are plans for the North Thompson Valley to join in the celebration. “We’re going to invite everyone who has ties to the valley to come on home and join in the party,” said North Thompson Fall Fair and Rodeo Association (NTFFRA) president Jill Hayward. “Call it a homecoming, reunion, or gathering – whatever the name it’s going to be a weekend of fun and nostalgia.” Hayward was presenting the NTFFRA’s plan for a summer event in 2008 to Susan Garland, Bill Kershaw, and Donna Kibble last Wednesday evening as part of a Spirit of BC discussion on how the valley could get involved in BC’s birthday bash. Every community in B.C. is being invited to participate in this year-long celebration of B.C.’s cultural diversity, community strength and widespread achievement, in celebration of the 150th anniversary of the founding of the Crown Colony of British Columbia in 1858. “The Province will provide $1 million in funding to help communities stage local BC2008 celebrations. The events will be run through the Spirit of BC and funding will be shared with all of the regions in the province,” stated Kibble, the North Thompson’s Spirit of BC chairman. She noted that our region encompasses Vinsulla to Blue River and that a planning meeting will also be held in Clearwater and Blue River within the next few weeks. “We can work on events that are already existing and add to them, or even create a new venue,” said Kibble, “We’ll start with a great event in February which is Spirit of BC Week and then feature events all year long such as the Fall Fair and the Clearwater Music Festival. The addition of a gathering or homecoming for the valley is very exciting.” Hayward outlined the NTFFRA plans to invite valley rancher and pioneer families to attend and participate in a brand burning that will see all of the historic and existing brands from the valley burned into cedar boards and mounted in a prominent place on the fairgrounds. A beef barbecue will compliment the event. “We have plans to bring one or two pack trips out of the mountains around Barriere for the first day of the event, as well as possibly hikers who will follow a historic trail into the area as well,” said Hayward. Garland noted that due to the fact the area is called the North Thompson it would only be appropriate that activity was included that spoke of the history contained on the river which could include travellers arriving from both north and south on the waterway. Kershaw suggested the addition of a picnic lunch event, a baseball game, and other games that were played when families met and socialized in yesteryear. “People had a lot of fun in those days when they got together,” said Kershaw, “We need to get the whole valley involved and invite the different organizations to join in and take part.” It was also noted that history of the Yellowhead #5 Highway should be included. Plans for cowboy music and poetry, First Nations involvement, river activities and more filled the evening discussion. “We must have a plan for the valley’s events finalized by September,” said Kibble, “That’s when I must send in our application to Spirit of BC. requesting funding.” Hayward noted that the NTFFRA would be more than happy to partner together with Spirit of BC and other individuals and organizations for the event tentatively scheduled for the June 28, 29, 2008 weekend. “There is a lot of family history in the valley, we’d like to bring those families together and help them celebrate,” said Hayward. An initiative of 2010 Legacies Now, the Spirit of BC program promotes community innovation, and lasting legacies for British Columbians, leading up to the 2010 Winter Games and beyond. The core of the Spirit of BC program is the network of 98 Spirit of B.C. Community Committees (of which the North Thompson is one) that represent over 200 communities across the province.
